Now That I am Caught Up

Now that I am all caught up on posts I can share the news I got today. It's not happy news and I am actually quite devastated, but Paris was career changed today. She was CC'd because she has Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, which in plain English means she has blurred vision. The condition is not expected to be progressive. I feel horrible because I should have noticed there was something wrong. There are just no words for how disappointed I am, Paris was the perfect dog and would have made an excellent guide. I hate health cc's they are really the hardest. Since no other organization will take her with a vision impairment I have a very difficult decision to make. I just can't imagine her being anybody's pet but mine, but I just can't think of a way to make it work. What to do, what to do. . .

Phase Report Day

I was so excited to see Paris on the phase report today. I wasn't expecting her to show up for at least a week or two. It made my day! Good luck Paris, only nine more to go!

Paris 4V94 LAB F 1

Phase #1
•Pre-training physical exam
•Neutering/spaying (with the exception of potential breeding stock dogs who are under evaluation at this time)
•X-rays
•Eye checks
•Relaxing walks on campus and play sessions
•Introduction to the kennel environment and schedule
•General daily care and grooming

Also, yesterday was Picassa's first puppy class. She did well considering she was meeting a ton of new dogs and people. She was pretty distracted and didn't listen to me most of the time but that's okay, she will get there. It was also the first puppy class, in a long time, where all the puppies showed up (there are always a couple missing) so we took most of class time to get a group picture. I had about 40 pictures and this is the only one where at least the humans look semi-decent. The rest people or dogs are making really weird faces. Some are kinda funny, but I'll be nice and only show the good one. :D Aren't we just the cutest club ever! I love my club so much, they are wonderful people and so much fun to talk to and be with. We are up to 11 puppies, that is the most we have had in a long time. It's so much fun!

Phase 8!!!

Fullerton skipped another phase this week. He is now in phase 8!! I am getting really excited for him, and I am so proud of my boy. Keep it up Fuller. Here is what he has been up to:

Phase #7

• Guidework in extremely challenging downtown urban areas
• Training on buses, light rail/subway systems and platform edges
• Introduction to low overhead clearances
• Advanced off leash obedience
• Formal traffic training

Phase #8

• Advanced guidework and obedience training continues
• Intensive indoor mall training with crowds and slick floors
• Advanced sidewalkless training with obstacles

I know it has been a long time since I have done a Paris post. I have been pretty busy lately and I promise I will try to get one up this weekend. I have a ton of pictures and stuff to share. :D

Phase. . .WHAT?!?!?!

I was very surprised when I opened up the phase report this morning. I checked it about 12 times before I believed what it said. But, Fullerton is in phase 6!! Who needs phase 4 and 5 anyway? :D I can't even describe how happy I am. . . and relieved, I was starting to get REALLY nervous and worried. I am still worried because he still has 4 phases to do but I am so much less worried than before. He is over half way there now, I am so proud of my boy. Keep it up Fullerton!! Here is what he has been up to on campus the last couple weeks:

Phase #4

• Progression of guide work training: more difficult sidewalks in busier sections of downtown areas
• Training on more complex street crossings and curbs
• Obstacle clearance initiated by the dogs; they begin to guide their mobility instructors through the campus obstacle course
• Preliminary obedience testing and evaluation of the dogs' reactions to head collars

Phase #5

• Preliminary guide work testing with the mobility instructor under blindfold
• Complete veterinary history review
• More challenging guide work training environments (pedestrian traffic, stairs, different flooring surfaces, etc.)

Phase #6

• Guide work routes in difficult and challenging work environments (heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic areas, wide crossings, hectic atmospheres, etc.)
• Introduction to sidewalkless areas and rounded curbs
• Continued work in malls, stores and buildings, with increasing exposure to varying sights, sounds and smells
• Lessons in advanced guide work skills, such as moving turns
• Introduction to "intelligent disobedience" (dogs learn to refuse to obey a command if it is unsafe to execute)
• Advanced obedience training

Phase 3!

Fullerton is now in phase 3!! He is one of two dogs in formal training right now in phase 3. . . I am starting to get nervous. The rest of his string is now in phase 4 and 5. . . But, I am so proud of him and happy he is advancing! Keep it up. Here is what Fuller is up to on campus now:

Phase #3

• Guidework training in quiet residential areas
• Frequent rides in the training vans
• Introduction to more advanced guidework commands and responses ("Right," "Left," and "Over Here,") continued training on commands from phase #2
• Introduction to curbs and street crossings
• Progressive obstacle course training on campus
• Mall exposure walks
• Dog social sessions

And, I was wrong about Forte in my last post, he is going through final breeder evals, he isn't official yet. Still keeping fingers crossed for him. He is going into foster care for the holidays for about a month and then will do his final tests!

I know it's been two weeks since I last updated but it's been super busy at work and I haven't had any time to spend on my blog, but I promise after Christmas things will slow down a little and I will have a big fat update on the Paris. :D Have a good Christmas everyone!!

Phase 2!!

Phase 2!!!! This may not seem like a big deal because there are still 8 phases but I am so happy for my boy!!! I have not had a puppy make it to phase 2 since my 2nd puppy. Prudy, puppy #1 was career changed in phase 8, Tahoma, puppy #2 breeder/guide, then Glennie and Spanky, puppies #3 and #6 were both career changed before formal training and Adeline and Sherman, puppies #4 and #5 were both career changed in phase 1. So for me 2 is a big deal. Good job Fuller, I am so very proud of you! Here is what Fuller is up to on campus this week:

Phase #2

• Preliminary obedience training
• Exposure to distractions (toys, food, other dogs, cats, etc.)
• First on-campus workouts with a harness
• Introduction to the BEST program training techniques (including treadmill sessions)
• Sessions to teach guidework-specific commands (such as "forward," "Halt," Hopp up," and "steady") and the desired response to those commands
• On leash introduction to the campus obstacle course

AND,

Fullertons brother Forte is officially a breeder. I hope I can raise a Fuller neice or nephew sometime that would be so cool. His other brother Filby is in phase 6 and the last brother Flamenco is currently unaccounted for. If anyone knows his whereabouts I would love to know.

Fullerton Withdrawls. . .

The last few weeks I have really been missing Fullerton. I forget what it is like to have a dog in formal training, and not just that but in limbo. He has been gone for nearly 6 weeks and he hasn't shown up on the phase report yet. He was dropped from breeding after a week and a half so that is at least 4 1/2 weeks of nothing. Each week the phase report comes and I hold my breath as it downloads and then there is no Fuller. It is very disappointing, especially since there are other dogs that went in for breeder evals with him and are now on the phase report. Then I just tell myself, maybe next week. I really hope he isn't just sitting waiting for a string, I hope he is doing some sort of training, I hope he didn't get sick, or is not having a tough time recovering from his neuter surgery. GRRR!! I just hate not knowing, I hate not having control over anything dealing with my special boy anymore. I really want news, it is amazing how relieving a number next to your dogs name is. So, maybe this week. . . . Okay rant over. Thanks for letting me vent. :D

Meet Lucy Vial!!!

This is Lucy she is a two year old female lab/german shorthair pointer mix. She belongs to my cousin who is going to Africa until August to build schools for the kids out there. Her roomate is going to keep her during the week and I will have her on weekends while the roomate is working. She is a really sweet girl and has such a cute face. Her and Prudy get along really well too and Prudy loves having a dog her size to play with. I love her coloring too. She is a liver color on her feet and gets darker up her body until it is black, her tail is black and goes liver towards the end, and she has white spots on her legs face and chest. She also has a long dewclaw her right hind foot. It is interesting. We are going to have fun this summer!

Adeline is the only one from her litter (that is in training) that is still under breeding watch so I am crossing my fingers for her. Also, Avery is class ready, phase 10 YAY!!! I am so exited for him. I have heard that he is a great dog. Also, Artemis moved from 7 to 8. Moving right along. Glennies sibs are all still in phase four but Giovanna in doing breeder evals. There may be a breeder from that litter. Woohoo! Renna and Rose each advanced a phase each. I am still trying to find out whether Rae has become a breeder or not. But, they are all doing well.

A lot of new stuff this week. Alya, Adeline, Argyle, Rose, and Russ have all entered advanced training. Tahoma only has two more boys in puppy raising home, Rebel and Rally. I know one is going back in June and the other in July. Adeline has two sisters and a brother, Anna, Avani, and Amigo still in raiser homes. I am not sure when any of them are going back. Now that I have a pup in formal training I am going to be very anxious on Thursdays. I hope they all continue to do well.

Not much change just Albright and all of Glennie's sibs are done with health evals and moved to phase 2. Rae also moved to phase 5, I thought they didn't continue training when they undergo Breeder evals but who knows. Maybe she is in Oregon and waiting to hitch a ride to San Rafael. But, Rae is undergoing BREEDER EVALS!!!!!!! I am so exited that GDB watns to continue Tahom's genes. She was such a special puppy and I am really rooting for one of her pups to become a breeder.

I know a lot of dogs that are in formal training right now. I wish them all the best and hope they make great guides.
It looks like all of Glennie's (3rd puppy I raised cc'd for stress on outings) siblings just went back for training. I will be sure to follow them and hope they all do well.
